Church
Mission Statement
Our mission is to
be a servant church,
presenting the Good News of Christ to
all
through our thoughts, words and deeds.
We fulfill our
mission by:
- being unified in Christ,
- pursuing
deep spirituality,
- fostering
true community,
- cherishing
unity in diversity,
- and
working for justice.
Our Larger Church
First Christian Church is an
ecumenical congregation that believes the kingdom of God exists wherever Christ
is accepted. We are affiliated with The Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ). We are also a Partnership
Church, representing the United
Church of Christ in our community. The Disciples and the UCC have a
growing relationship as they seek ways to give witness to the special unity they
share in Christ.
"The Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) is a community of believers who, through baptism into Jesus Christ are
bound by covenant to God and to one another. Disciples draw their inspiration
from Scripture and the Holy Spirit, celebrating around the Lord's Table the
life, death and resurrection, and continuing presence of Christ. We
proclaim the good news of our salvation. We claim as our particular witness
the quest for Christian unity as a sign of God's intention for the unity of
the whole community.
"While stressing freedom and
diversity under God, we believe unity and mission are inseparable; we witness
and serve among the whole human family in the interest of peace, justice,
mercy and kindness." (A
Disciples identity statement by Rev Kenneth Teagarden)

An Open and
Affirming Congregation - ONA
We are an "Open and
Affirming" congregation, meaning we extend a welcome to all persons,
regardless of ethic or racial heritage, gender, sexual orientation, and economic
or political status. Membership is based solely on one's confession of
faith in Jesus Christ. We are a church of all peoples for all people.
Open and Affirming is a
national movement among Disciples, the UCC and other Christians. It is a movement
that seeks to extend the love of God as widely as possible. It resists
the stereotypes and discriminatory practices and attitudes of many in our
society, including many in the Christian community. For more
information, click on the symbol at the right to visit the G.L.A.D.
